Steven Wilkinson AFA IAS
Partner

Paul and I started the firm in 1990 and we’ve taken pride in seeing it grow to the two office, four partner firm it is today servicing a broad range of personal and business clients. I spend my time between our Bingley and Ilkley offices.

Whilst I work with all business types and sectors across a wide spectrum, I tend to focus on owner managed SMEs where I feel I can deliver most value. I’m involved with all aspects of accounts and taxation, but work closely with clients to help them prepare budgets and forecasts, as well as providing strategic advice during the different growth stages of their businesses.

I always strive to deliver tailored services to ensure my client’s needs are fully catered for in a timely and cost effective manner. As and when required, I can provide a financial director role and always look at ways to help my client’s grow their business, so they flourish and maximise financial and taxation efficiencies.

In my spare time I play five-a-side football and go running and I also like walking with my family and the children’s cocker spaniels. I love skiing and my aim would be to go more than once a year. I also like meeting up with friends, listening to music (anything from David Bowie and Led Zeppelin to Cold Play and Mozart) and watching a good movie. My favourite film is ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and I also enjoy ‘Back to the Future’, Die Hard and the Ocean’s series of movies.

I co-founded the firm with Steven in 1990 and over the years have developed a mixed portfolio of clients. As a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser, my focus now is on tax compliance and tax planning work, as well as advising businesses on their strategy and development.

I split my time between the Bingley and Ilkley offices and am regularly out and about visiting clients.

In addition to helping clients ensure their businesses are compliant with the relevant regulations and deadlines, I try to provide practical and relevant advice in order that they are able to develop their business in the direction that they would like it to go. At the same time, I work with them to mitigate their taxation liabilities where possible.

When I’m not assisting clients I like most sports including cricket and football, although these days it’s mainly watching rather than participating! I also enjoy listening to music, although my tastes have now moderated a little from the ‘heavy rock’ of my younger days.

After completing my degree at Loughborough University I joined the firm in 2010 as a trainee accountant, gaining my ACA qualification in 2014 and becoming a partner in 2017.

Whilst my workload covers all aspects of taxation, accountancy and audit, I have developed an expert knowledge of cloud based accounting systems including Kashflow and Xero. With the impending Making Tax Digital (MTD) legislation set to affect most businesses across the UK, I shall be helping clients make the transition to electronic record keeping and quarterly financial reporting.

I specialise in dealing with owner managed SME’s and particularly enjoy this work due to its broad range; from preparation of statutory financial statements and tax returns to management accounts and succession / exit planning.

I work from both our Bingley and Ilkley offices and enjoy getting out to spend time with clients as I feel this is the best way to understand their needs and enables me to tailor my advice accordingly. I find that giving proactive recommendations to clients in an efficient and timely manner is key to helping them run their business effectively and profitably.

In my spare time I play football, squash and am a keen follower of Formula 1. I enjoy travelling, having visited many European cities, as well as more obscure destinations such as Bolivia and the Amazon Rainforest. The ‘Golden Triangle’ route on the West Coast of the USA is definitely on the bucket list!

I started my apprenticeship at Wilkinson and Partners in January 2020. I’m located in the Ilkley office where my bookkeeping role includes processing clients’ invoices and receipts into the appropriate accounting software packages. I also support the admin function, carrying out duties such as filing, photocopying, sorting the post and covering the reception desk when required.

In addition to my role in the practice, I am also studying for my Association of Accounting Technicians qualification. I enjoy the bookkeeping aspect and in particular keeping clients’ financial records up to date so they have a clear picture of what is happening in their businesses on a monthly basis.

I really enjoy travelling and I’m always looking for the next destination to go to. I love going out and going on walks or swimming, but also love a chilled day in watching a thrilling TV series or movies and eating delicious food. To keep fit I go to spinning classes during the week.
